Speaking Better English

Each language has its own unique way of using the organs that create the speech of that language, so that when in the teaching of English the grammar and the words alone are taught - but the vocal or oral sounds are omitted or overlooked - an imperfect sounding version is the result.

When speaking English the vocal organs are used in very different and unique ways to other languages. Learning to speak English as a non-native English speaker will require vocal exercises that teach the speech organs to be used differently from the old speech patterns.

If there is no big change in how the vocal organs are used then a fractured accent results; one which does not represent the true and beautiful sounds of the English language.

Of course, small differences in accent may be delightful. But when the listener has real difficulty in deciphering what is being said and must constantly ask for words to be repeated, it is natural that they will most likely give up or turn off and, sadly, the thread of understanding is lost. Naturally, this leads to alienation and frustration.

One can understand that it will always be easier to revert to the old language but when "groups" mix only with members of their own group it is much harder to become proficient in the new language. Because of their poor articulation, enunciation and understanding skills, a separation occurs and an isolation with native Australians can develop. I believe this can have far reaching effects on the unity of a nation.

Therefore it is important that English is spoken at home.

It so often happens that new English speakers revert to their old language at home - mainly because of the other members of the family who may have less developed English skills. Additionally, because they may not be meeting great numbers of people from outside their group, to them it doesn't seem important. But what it does in fact do is to alienate these people - it builds within them a strong feeling of isolation, separation and difference.

Language is the way people communicate and when that language is not understood how can we communicate effectively?

Some people may fear that by speaking their new language at home their original language will disappear. This is not so. In fact, research shows that both languages strengthen and improve. One way to strengthen your language skills is to set specific times at home where English must be the only language spoken - perhaps meal times. You'll be surprised to see how quickly everyone's speech improves and how their confidence is boosted.
